About

Nahal Peres drains to the northern Arava, near Arava junction and Metzad Tamar. In the catalog it is split into two sections: Upper Nahal Peres and Lower Nahal Peres, which has pools and an impressive drop known as 'the Window'.

Each section can be done on its own, or the upper and lower can be joined into one especially long, hard day. Either way a car shuttle is needed, and checking the forecast matters because of flash flood risk.

Access notes

The upper part starts at Metzad Tamar on Route 25, on a blue-marked dirt road towards Bik'at Tzvaim. The lower part starts on Route 25 at the head of Ma'ale Sdom, where marked trails lead down to Ma'ok Gvei Peres. All routes end at a dirt parking near Arava junction, at the foot of Ma'ale Peres.

Parking

At Metzad Tamar (the abandoned south part of the quarry is a night campsite), on Route 25 at the head of Ma'ale Sdom, and at the dirt parking near Arava junction.

Safety

No entry when there is flash flood risk. After floods, deep pools have to be waded or swum and gear gets wet. The routes are linear, so plan a car at the end.

Recommendations

Decide in advance which part to do. The green trail along the north bank of the upper canyon gives a good view of the drops.

Equipment

Rappelling gear for the big drops, a helmet, plenty of water, and dry bags or watertight containers for gear after floods.
