About

Nahal Yizrach is a desert stream in the southern Judean Desert, near Neve Zohar and Metzad Zohar. The route is circular, starting and ending at the Tamrur-Nahal Yizrach overnight campsite. Difficulty is moderate, but it calls for skill in getting the last person down without bolts.

The drops are varied: a bolted opening drop on a slab, a short overhanging drop with only one sound bolt on its south side, a drop with two options, from the south off a pair of bolts or from the north in the bed with a stop on a ledge, another bolted drop, and a long slab drop whose bolts were vandalized, so you anchor naturally. The drop after it lies inside a reserve, and rappelling there is forbidden.

After the last permitted drop, leave the bed to the south following cairns and climb a hard ascent that eases gradually up to the cars. With two cars you can instead go down east to the Israel National Trail and walk to a car parked at Metzad Zohar.

Getting there

Safety

Rappelling the stream's last drop, inside a reserve, is forbidden. The bolts on the long drop have been vandalized: do not use them and build a natural anchor. The overhanging drop has only one sound bolt. Judean Desert rules apply: check the forecast for floods and heat, and carry enough water. The exit climb is hard and needs fitness.

Escape routes

  • A right-bank bypass above drop E leads down to the foot of drop F, with a branch to the ledge between the two drops.

Recommendations

For rappellers experienced with bolt-free rappels and last-person descents. Autumn and spring are the best seasons, and early mornings also work. After the day you can swim at the Dead Sea beaches or visit Ein Bokek.

Equipment

Two medium-length ropes, leave-behind slings for the natural stations, and gear that lets the last person descend without a fixed anchor. A helmet, harness and descender for each rappeller.
