Meeting point (parking)

Metzokei Dragot night campsite

The meeting point is the parking spot. You continue on foot from here.

Coordinates: 31.59142, 35.39192

About

The upper section of Nahal Tur starts near Metzukei Dragot and descends toward the northern Dead Sea. It is a pure rappelling route: tall drops, a shorter one in the middle, and the canyon's tallest drop at the end. Every drop has plenty of Israel Nature and Parks Authority chemical bolts.

From the overnight campsite walk north on the red trail, and at the split turn east onto the black trail, which drops into the canyon's incision and the first drop. After the last drop climb out on the black trail to the road up to Metzukei Dragot, where a second car waits. From here you can also carry on into Lower Nahal Tur.

Getting there

נפגשים בצפון ים המלח, בחניה מסודרת לצד הכביש ומשם הקפצת רכבים.

Access notes

Set Waze to 'מצוקי דרגות' and continue on a green jeep track to the overnight campsite. From there walk north on the red trail, and at the split east on the black footpath, down to the incision and the first drop. The exit after the last drop follows the black trail to the Metzukei Dragot road. A car shuttle is needed.

Parking

One car at the overnight campsite near Metzukei Dragot, at the start, and a second on the road up to Metzukei Dragot, at the exit point.

Safety

Long rappels that call for full control and solid rope management. Never come with ropes shorter than the big drop needs. In winter check for flood warnings, in summer for heat stress.

Escape routes

  • A little below the big drop a clear trail leaves the bed and runs along the south bank to Route 90.

Weather constraints

פתוח אוקטובר עד מאי. בקיץ (יולי-אוגוסט) סכנת חום קיצונית. אסור להיכנס בזמן התרעות שיטפון. מומלץ להתחיל עם שחר.

Recommendations

For advanced adult rappellers only, not beginners. The season runs from autumn to spring. Start early; if you want to add the lower section, plan an especially long day.

Equipment

Two long ropes that cover the big drop. A helmet, harness and descender for each rappeller, and a headlamp in case of delay.
