Oravim crossing under the Tapline

Coordinates: 33.14245, 35.68675

About

The stream starts on the slopes of Mount Bar'on, crosses the plateau through an active firing zone and the Oravim reservoir, and after the Tapline begins its descent through a layered basalt canyon to the Hula valley. In winter, after rain, big falls run here.

After two low steps and a jeep track across the bed comes a three-metre fall, then one of about eight metres. Some sixty metres on, the Oravim falls begin: three falls in a row, thirty-four, eleven and ten metres, with wide steps between them. A red trail on the north rim leads to a viewpoint over the falls.

Below the falls the bed is covered in rockfall debris. About three hundred metres on Nahal Kela joins, and further down lie the wrecks of an APC and a truck that fell into the gorge. The book describes a full route of about five kilometres to the patrol road, but says it is temporarily closed because of rockfalls. The book does not describe rappelling the falls.

Access notes

The viewpoint route starts where the stream passes under the Tapline, follows the red trail on the north rim and ends at a viewpoint over the Oravim falls (about 1.6 km, out and back). The viewpoint can also be reached on a marked jeep track.

Points on the map

Safety

The lower stream is temporarily closed because of rockfalls. The path is unstable and may crumble. East of the Tapline is an active firing zone.

Weather constraints

A seasonal stream; the falls run after winter rain.

Recommendations

Do not plan a descent of the falls before confirming with the Nature and Parks Authority that the stretch has reopened.
