About

Nahal Mordim runs from Masada north toward the Dead Sea, north of Nahal Ben Yair. It is a varied route of moderate difficulty for advanced rappellers: bolted slab drops, small drops that can be bypassed, and longer drops further on.

Midway there is a drop you can rappel in one go or split with a stop on a ledge, for anyone who wants more technical work. The drop after it has a tree in the middle of the line, so allow for it when throwing and pulling the rope. The last drop is long, half slab and half overhanging.

From Masada's western parking walk north on the Israel National Trail, past Ben Yair and the overnight campsite, and drop into the bed shortly after. At the end leave the bed for the red trail to the parking, or climb the Runner's Path.

Access notes

From Masada's western parking go north on the Israel National Trail, past the Nahal Ben Yair incision and the overnight campsite, and drop into the bed shortly after the campsite. You can also park at the eastern lot and go up the Runner's Path or by cable car. A car shuttle is possible, but the drive is very long. The exit is on the red trail to the parking, or up the Runner's Path.

Parking

Masada's western parking or its eastern parking. The cable car on the eastern side only starts running in the morning.

Safety

Do not rappel on very hot or rainy days; flash flood risk is high. One of the small drops has no bolts and is better bypassed. At the drop with the tree, plan the rope throw and the pull so the rope does not get stuck. Take care on the scree.

Recommendations

For advanced rappellers looking for a varied, fairly long route. The season is winter, autumn and spring, and shade only lasts through the early morning, so start early.

Equipment

Two long ropes suited to the last drop, and leave-behind gear for the stations. A helmet, harness and descender for each rappeller.
