About

Nahal Kane is a short channel that reaches the northern Dead Sea shore between Nahal Tmarim and Nahal Samar. It drains a small area at the eastern edge of the desert plateau and drops down the escarpment in a chain of tall falls, without a real canyon.

Where the red dirt road crosses it the channel is shallow and open, and after a few hundred metres the drops begin. First a small six metre step, right after it forty metres, and after a short walk forty-eight metres.

The last drop is the highest, eighty-five metres. On the right (south) side it is one continuous wall, on the left two separate steps of forty-five and thirty metres. Below it the bed reaches Route 90 after about half a kilometre, and from there you walk back north to the parking.

Access notes

From the parking climb the blue trail of Ma'ale Tmarim, on the south side of Nahal Tmarim. From the top continue on blue north to a green-marked dirt road, follow it west to a junction with a red-marked dirt road, and take the red road south until it crosses Nahal Kane. From the end of the stream reach Route 90 and walk north along it for about one point two kilometres to the parking.

Parking

Parking at the entrance to the date plantations, by the mouth of Nahal Tmarim on Route 90. The loop starts and ends there.

Safety

No entry when there is flash flood risk. The book mentions no bypasses or ways out, so plan to rappel the whole run. The walk back is along Route 90, so take care.

Recommendations

At the last drop you can choose between one long rappel on the right side and two shorter ones on the left.

Equipment

Full rappelling gear, a helmet for everyone, plenty of water, and ropes suited to the long last drop, depending on the side you choose.
