Black Canyon / Nahal Zavitan

The Black Canyon, also called Middle Zavitan, is the canyon section linking Upper and Lower Zavitan inside the Yehudiya reserve. It is named after the black basalt of its walls, and is one of the most beautiful wet routes in Israel.

First you climb down a small drop using metal stakes, then come rappels that land in deep pools too deep to stand in, followed by a short swim to the way out. Between the drops you walk, scramble and swim along the gorge. It is a long day of moderate difficulty.

Entry to the canyon is by advance booking and registration with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, and the rangers only allow closed shoes.

The meeting point is the gate of the Yehudiya reserve, north of the Sea of Galilee. Entry to the canyon requires advance booking and registration with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

Swimming is a must: the rappels land in deep water too deep to stand in. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority sets a minimum age. Rangers do not allow sandals, only closed shoes. Vultures nest in the reserve, and wolves and wild boar live there.

For teenagers and adults who swim well and are ready for a long day in the water, not complete beginners. The season is summer. Book early, as places are limited.

A harness and helmet for each participant, and a dry bag or sealed box for food, phone and keys, since bags go into the water with you. Closed shoes only. On a guided trip the technical gear is supplied by the guide.
