About

The Parsanon gorge is a side channel of Nahal Parsa above the Dead Sea hotels. It is a short but technical route with close-set drops and a choice of anchor points, looking out over Nahal Parsa, the mountains of Jordan and the Dead Sea. After rain it sometimes has pools of water.

The first drop goes down to a ledge, with an intermediate station in its upper third that lets the last person change anchor point. The second drop leaves from that ledge: you can rappel from the edge of the ledge, a little to the south and prettier, or from the ledge itself, which is easier for the last person. On the way to the third drop you descend south of a huge boulder, where there are bolts for a handline. The third drop has three options: from the south, the prettiest, from the middle on ring anchors, or from the north, stepped and easy for the last person.

From the parking walk the promenade beside the road to the climb toward Nahal Parsa, then drop into the southern channel and join Parsanon. The walk runs right along the cliffs at the mouth of Nahal Parsa and calls for care.

Safety

The walk along the mouth of Nahal Parsa crosses exposed, cliffy ground: take care and keep away from the edge. No entry during flood warnings, and do not go during heat waves. The drops are close together, so plan the stations and the order of rappellers in advance.

Weather constraints

אסור להיכנס בזמן התרעות שיטפון. מומלץ להימנע בימי שרב (מעל 38 מעלות). העונה המומלצת: אוקטובר עד אפריל.

Recommendations

For strong hikers with rappelling experience, not beginners. The season runs from autumn to spring. After rain, check whether the pools hold water.

Equipment

Two medium-length ropes, a short tether for moving freely before the ropes are set, rings, slings and prusiks. A helmet and harness for each rappeller.
