About

The crag is in Guy Ben Hinnom, the Hinnom Valley below the Old City walls, not far from the Sultan's Pool. It is a very accessible urban climbing spot: the cliff is right by the road, a few steps along a clear path, with routes at every level from easy to hard.

You can lead, top-rope and climb trad. The stations at the top are easiest to set up from above, with an extra rope that lets you reach them protected.

In summer the wall is shaded from midday; in winter it stays wet for the days after rain. All around are places worth combining: the City of David, the Western Wall, the suspension bridge and the Sultan's Pool.

Getting there

Access notes

Set Waze to 'חווה בגיא' (Chava BaGai), a tourist farm right next to the crag. From the parking it is a few steps along a clear path to the base.

Parking

A dirt parking area at Chava BaGai. Park tightly and neatly so there is room for everyone. On evenings with shows at the Sultan's Pool the parking can be full.

Safety

There has been construction work above the crag and loose stones can fall. Wear a helmet whenever you are near the wall. After rain the rock stays wet. When there are big events at the Sultan's Pool the area is crowded.

Weather constraints

Recommendations

Suits beginners, children and groups, and also experienced climbers looking for trad in the city. It works all year: summer afternoons when the wall is shaded, and dry winter days. Easy to combine with a walk in the Old City.

Equipment

A dynamic climbing rope, plus a short extra rope to reach the stations safely from above. A set of quickdraws, and nuts for trad climbers.
