About

Metzuk Dalton (Dalton Cliff) is in Biriya Forest north of Safed, on the rim of Nahal Dalton. It is one of the best-known rappelling sites in the Upper Galilee: a stepped wall with a comfortable angle, chemical-bolt stations installed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, and shade on the wall for most of the day.

The rappel starts at the cliff edge, and the stations sit just above the wall's second step. You can rappel independently, lower participants from the top, or climb back up. The walk back up after the rappel is a short, easy path on the west side.

The area above the cliff is exposed to the sun, so a group staying long should bring shade. The cliff looks out over Nahal Dalton and the Golan Heights, and on clear days as far as Mount Hermon. In summer the rappel can be combined with a visit to the nearby Alma Cave.

Getting there

Access notes

Set Waze to 'יער ביריה' (Biriya Forest) and drive to Ein Nevoria. By the spring a half-hidden track leaves between the trees, west of the wooden sign; follow it to a fenced area with a large Dalton Cliff sign. The last stretch needs a high-clearance car because of protruding rocks. From the parking it is a short walk to the cliff, and the way back up after the rappel is on the west side.

Parking

A free dirt parking area next to the fenced area with the cliff sign. On the last stretch of the track a low car may scrape.

Points on the map

Safety

The rappel is on a stepped wall: take care at the step and with where the rope runs over the edge. There is no shade on top, so on hot days plan for water and cover. Alma Cave is closed for much of the year, during bat hibernation and the breeding season.

Weather constraints

פתוח כל השנה. האביב והסתיו מציעים את תנאי מזג האוויר הנוחים ביותר. מומלץ להימנע מימים חמים במיוחד בקיץ.

Recommendations

Good for beginners, families and large groups thanks to the comfortable angle and short access. Summer is the recommended season, especially combined with a visit to Alma Cave. If you plan a long stay, bring a shade tarp.

Equipment

Two medium-length ropes are enough for independent or belayed rappels. If you lower people from the top, bring slightly longer ropes so you can use every station. For climbing, a dynamic rope and quickdraws as needed. If you add Alma Cave, a headlamp for every participant.
